Part II ~ Riots and Chaos!

Proverbs 8:13 (KJV) The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the forward mouth, do I hate.

Perhaps it was because I hadn’t been married very long at the time, and the world was my oyster! Perhaps it was because I was the lone Caucasian person in a university classroom of 250+ people. Maybe the root was stemming from the largest riot of my time, but certain elements from the Rodney King case embedded into my memory and my sub-conscious permanently. The jury’s verdict of “not guilty” sparked over one billion dollars in damage. Eventually, 12,000 people were arrested. As best I recall, over 60 people were killed as a direct result of rioting.

But what came back to my forefront in light of the Baltimore, Maryland riots this week, was Pastor MacArthur of Grace Church, who was spokesperson and pastor back in 1992.

As adults we didn’t have the Internet. There were no laptops. A smart-phone was considered push button instead of rotary. There wasn’t Google ® or 24 hour access to news media. It was primarily the newspapers and network television that we used to gain information.

I vividly recall a female reporter reading the following quote from Pastor MacArthur. (It took me quite a while to find this message online, but I did find it!) “The problem in our city is not lack of opportunity or lack of education. The problem in our city is not too much possessions, materialism. Those are only symptoms of a problem! The problem in our city is the problem of the wretchedness of human heart. And nobody escapes it.”

Wow! Profound! I remember the reporter’s shaky voice. She quickly dapped away tears as fires blazed through broken windows; cars sat empty and broken like cast away carcasses on the Serengeti of the city. Gray smoke slowly crawled skyward in the horizon, leaving smut and rubble among crowded sidewalks. It was, in essence, scattered ruins, the remains of humanity.

“It knows no race. It knows no color. It knows no location. It is pervasive. Sin is the degenerative and damning power in the human stream that pollutes every man and every woman and every part of life.”

What could I possibly say that would better capture where America is at this time? (Remember, these words were spoken back in 1992) Where Baltimore stands? Pastor MacArthur went on to say, “We live in a city with churches on every street corner. But most of them don’t make any difference, any impact in their community at all.”

Oh the sting! Those words hurt! But, maybe he’s right! I hope you begin to search your heart. Your home. Your faith in a sovereign God. Do we really make such an insignificant impact on the world around each of us?

As I stated in yesterday’s blog, “It starts at home!” But MacArthur said it better. He alleged of the problem, “It doesn’t come from the outside in, it comes from the inside out!”

So, I leave you with some very simple “Best Practices.” (A term I learned about 15 years ago through an employer).

1) Hold yourself AND your family accountable! You don’t have to be mean spirited about it. But in loving-kindness’…do what’s right!
2)  Using a buffer is still good! Just because you think it, doesn’t mean you say it! Don’t be rude. Utilize some sensitivity. And by ALL means, don’t let someone else’s bitterness carry over to you!
3)  Literally BE the example of humility. Of faithfulness. Of strong ethics. Of God-pleasing actions.
4) Pray without ceasing! (I Thess 5:17)
5)  If God Himself can love the unlovable, forgive the unforgiveable, pardon the unpardonable, and set free those in bondage, then surely WE can also demonstrate compassion!

Wouldn’t it be terrible to live in a land without laws and without authority figures? We’ve seen a taste of what would happen just this week – sinful man would turn upon itself!

The ONLY hope for society in my opinion is the hope of Christ Jesus. He gave us equality, mercy, freedom, and uniformity at the Cross of Calvary.

My heart strives to get back to the basics! “Faith, Family, Forever” as my church proclaims it. Let’s put down the iPhones, the iPod’s, the pornography, the filthy language, the addictions, the selfishness, the competitiveness, and our critical natures. Let’s TURN TO GOD! Less of SELF = More of Him!

In the meantime, thanks for reading, and let’s do…

Look UP my friends!

Riots and Chaos

If your thoughts are similar to mine about the recent riots in Baltimore, Maryland, then we might both share feeling confused and discouraged. I'm not a political activist or asking for political feedback. This is and continues to be a Christian publication.

This week's rioting event quickly brings to mind and connects us to Mr. Rodney King, the OJ Simpson trial, the Ferguson riots, Trayvon Martin violence/riots, the Kimini Gray Riots (also known as the Brooklyn Riots) in 2013 and the list could continue almost indefinitely.

When is the last time we thought of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado? Red Lake Senior High in Minnesota where 8 people died? The Amish School in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania? The Virginia Tech Massacre from 2007? Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut? Perhaps you have recalled the 2012 shooting where 12 people were killed and 58 wounded in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater? Sadly, this list of violence and deadly harm could go on and on as well. Just recalling these events makes me queasy and heart sick. But here we are...yet again...asking God to make a victory out of our self-imported mess.

We are, as a general society, in a state of unrest. What's this from? WHY is the question I'm hearing asked most frequently.

There is no simple answer or simple solution for a complex state of affairs. I do know a few straight forward approaches though...let me share a few quotes to start the conversation.

Whether by blood, friendship, or both, people are connected to people. People have an incredible bond that starts within the soul of man - said by my husband, Pastor Hemric.

Fellow Christians (the original word was "Sisters") function as a safety net in a chaotic world simply by being there for each other - Carol Saline.

What about the mom, who on Monday, ran after her 16 year old son, and yelled and smacked him until he returned home? Is she a hero? I'm leery of the word hero, because I find very very few worthy of its definition, but is she a role model for other parents? That's for you to decide. I read that her son is one of her six children; her only son. Would she also have done this if one of her daughters had acted so atrociously? I sure hope so!  (I give her kudos that she knew he would be involved in misconduct and the horrible offense of turning rocks/weapons upon the police officers).

Nonetheless, for me personally, I don't think protest permits or quantifies illegal behaviors, self destructive acts, and/or gives anyone the option to reek havoc onto someone else or their property. As you probably heard growing up, "Two wrongs do not make a right!"

So, this is my suggestion -- my challenge to you, precious reader. Are we praying for our fellow man? Are we praying for our country during good times AND bad times? Are our lives truly reflective of our journey of faith?!

Are we setting the example for our future generations?
It starts at home, folks!

We understand that most teenagers are independent by nature. They've developed their own personality, their own values. Do your kids see you pray? Do they see your fears and doubts? Do they hear you talk trash about your church or about the church as a whole? Do they participate in God-oriented things more than other hobbies? I'm not judging you. I'm asking you to examine yourself, just as I must examine my own heart.

I'll continue Part II tomorrow, Lord willing :)

In the meantime...Ask yourself, who is greater? The one at the table, or the one who serves?!

And let's please look UP!

Five Things I've Learned!

Psalm 18:2 (KJV) The  Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer: my God my strength, in whom I will trust...

Hello friends,
And I do mean hello FRIENDS! I haven't written a blog in well over a year now...but it's time to get back to what God has planted within my spirit and my soul.

I'm so very thankful for His patience and long-suffering. After losing all the files for my first Cornerstone book, well, it was devastating. I was physically and spiritually sickened by the loss. I felt that I had let God down in one of His purposes for my life. I confess that I absolutely couldn't find the strength within to start over. I needed time and I was in need of that soul-filled peace that only God can grant. For me, writing must come from a quieted spirit. Even if that quietness is only a few minutes - or a few hours.

I somewhat shortly switched from the writing aspect of blogging to the spoken "vlog," which I post on my FB page. Leave it to me to  NOT be silent for long! I found that actually speaking verses writing has positive aspects as well.

A few things I've learned recently:

1) God is faithful! (Simple. Concise. Accurate!)
2) When we lose all hope, He CAN make a way in matters of the impossible!
3)The less highly we think of "man" the better off we'll be. The natural progression would mean we're looking UP to God! Don't let your critics control your work for your Heavenly Father!
4) We may not emotionally get OVER a few things in our lives, but God will see us THROUGH them!
5) When we're EMPTY, it's the perfect time to fill ourselves up with God. There isn't too much heaven, too much Scripture, too much spiritual growth to be had by anyone! Less of self = more of HIM.

Amen!
Thank you for reading...I'll see you soon!
